Mathematics Hacks: Vedic Mathematics For Faster Calculations

Unlike conventional methods of Math calculations, Vedic Mathematics has several ways to arrive at an answer to a problem. Hence, the choice is ours; we can choose any method that we find convenient. That is why Vedic Mathematics is becoming popular; people understand it easily. It can basically solve any kind of Math problems.

Calculators, computers, and mobile applications – though they are a blessing, in, some ways they have become a curse too. It has lead to the deterioration of our numerical skills. Vedic Math has very short, quick and easy methods which can be easily remembered. Students who are familiar with this system do not have the usual fear of Math and have a confidence. It is useful for analytical thinking and anyone can use it from students, teachers, professionals and the old or young. The Vedic Math shortcuts can also be used in advanced machine learning functions.

Now, let us look at some very simple math hacks which would amaze you

Math Hack 1: The 11 times magic

When you multiply any number by 10 you just add a 0 to the end, isn’t it? There is a similar way to multiply 11 by any two digit number –

In the original number, imagine that there is a space between the two digits. For example – let us take 42

  • 4_2
  • Now let’s add both the numbers and put them again in the middle –
  • 4_(4+2)_2
  • That’s all – the answer is 462.

If at all the numbers in the middle add up to a 2 digit number, all you need to do is put in the second number and add 1 to the first number –

  • 8_(8+9)_9
  • (8+1)_7_9
  • 9_7_9
  • 979 is the answer

Math Hack 2: Quick Square

Let’s think of a 2 digit number which ends in 5. If you want to square it, you can use the following trick.

You need to multiply the first digit by itself and then add 1, and then insert 25 in the end.

  • 352 = (3x(3+1)) & 25
  • 3 x 4 = 12
  • 1225

Math Hack 3: Multiply by 5

Remembering the 5 times table is quite easy. But when it comes to big numbers it gets complicated.

Let us take a number, divide it by 2; that means halve it. If you get a whole result insert a 0 at the end. If it is not a whole number, let the remainder be and add 5 at the end.

  • Step 1: 2342 x 5 = (2342 / 2) & 5 or 0
  • Step 2: 2342 / 2 = 1171 (it is a whole number. So we add 0)
  • Step 3: Answer = 11710

Let’s try another example –

5889 X 5 = 2944.5 (it is a fractional number. So we ignore the remainder and add 5) = 29445
