A Week Without Social Media – From Diaries Of An A Grade Student

Can we image spending a day without browsing through Facebook, twitter, Whatsapp, YouTube or Instagram? The answer would be a big NO for me and for almost everyone who is reading  this post. Today, social media is taking the virtual world by storm. In stead of speaking with each other over a coffee or in a library, people have started sending whats app messages. Even I start a day by sharing a “Good Morning” greetings in whatsapp and checking my facebook and instagram feed.  Every day I feel like sharing the status of the activities I am doing, be it Friday night parties, a trek or a night out with friends. For a person like me who is social buff, no day ends without landing on my social media accounts and share the updates with my friends and family. Let me tell you, I am equally good at my studies. All my assignments and homework is submitted on time and I get straight As in almost every subject.

Once I decided to stay away from all social media platforms for a week and here is how the experience was. It was hard from me on day one to avoid asking “today’s plan” to my friends early morning. I didn’t read the news and articles on facebook. I kept looking at the mobile hoping a message would suddenly pop up. I had to curb the urge of opening the notifications and responding to the not messages and updates. Finally, I deleted all social media Apps. I died of boredom on day one.

I continued my experiment of “1 Week without social media and what I learnt was:

  • Since I was not checking my phone during dinner time, I had amazing discussion on food and travel with my family. My parents were happy that along with studies, I have started taking interest in other activities
  • I missed the news/ articles I used to read on Twitter and facebook feed but I downloaded BBC News app and it worked for me
  • I directly called my friends to ask for the day’s plan and it avoided the miscommunication we used to have while reading and responding to messages
  • I had more free time which I used to read books, play football and do things like I like.

I finally conquered my addiction to social media after that week. I still use social media on a daily basis but I am definitely not addicted to it now.  Try this one week without social media challenge and I promise you it will do wonders for you!

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I
find this matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and extremely broad for me.
I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
